Varicose veins are abnormal veins just under the skin that have enlarged due to increased pressure in the veins. Normal veins, through a system of one-way valves, direct blood back to the heart. With age and the forces of gravity, over time these valves sometimes begin to fail and allow blood to collect in leg veins, causing high pressures in these veins. This high pressure causes the veins to become swollen, and to protrude in a rope-like manner. Varicose veins can cause aching, throbbing, fatigue, and leg cramps. They also can lead to blood clots and venous ulcers.

Endovenous Laser Closure is an FDA-approved alternative to the surgical stripping of the saphenous vein, which is the cause of most varicose vein cases. This therapy requires a small needle stick into the affected vein, through which a laser fiber is inserted. The laser energy is delivered inside the vein by the laser system causing the vein to collapse, and creating a permanent closure of the vein. This treatment is relatively painless, requiring only local anesthesia and is performed in our office. Following the procedure, the leg is wrapped and a compression stocking is applied. The patient can return to work and resume most normal activities the next day. The St. Joseph Vein Center uses the Venacure 980 laser system.
