Berrien County is going to illuminate several of its facilities with green lights to honor veterans and call attention to the issue of veteran suicide in November.
At a meeting Thursday, the Berrien County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution recognizing Operation Green Light.
Berrien County Veterans Services Director Maureen Adams said many veterans — between 44 and 72% — report struggling with high stress trying to adjust to life outside of the military when they return home.
“Veteran suicide has claimed over 30,000 lives since 2001,” Adams said. “That’s four times more than the number of U.S. military who died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
Adams said to show veterans they are supported and honored, people are encouraged to shine a green light in their windows between November 3 and November 11.
“Shining a light both literally and symbolically, we’re encouraging communities to display a green light as a beacon of hope, gratitude, and support for those that have worn the uniform. It’s our hope that this sparks conversation and encourages awareness of resources and support for veterans year-round.”
In Berrien County, green lights will be visible outside of the administration center, the jail, the legal aid office, and the two courthouses during Operation Green Light.
The county commission encourages all citizens to join in Operation Green Light.
