Reports from Washington, DC are that United States Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) has made the decision not to run for reelection in 2026.

In an interview from Washington, Sen. Peters told The Detroit News of his decision.

Peters is quoted as saying he is ready to leave public office in two years and move onto a new chapter that includes spending more time with his family, particularly a new grandchild who lives on the West Coast.

“I always thought there would be a time that I would step aside and pass the reins for the next generation. I also never saw service in Congress as something you do your whole life,” said Peters, who was first elected to the Senate in 2014.

Peters added, “I want to be very clear: I’m not retiring. I’m just not running for reelection in the Senate. I hope, God willing, I have a lot more good years ahead.”

The announcement is sure to shake up the gubernatorial race that’s also an open seat where some high-profile Republicans and Democrats have announced interest. It also comes at a time when now-President Donald Trump saw significant gains in Michigan during last November’s election.
