With Halloween and trick-or-treating taking place Thursday, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has some reminders for everyone to stay safe while having fun.
Undersheriff Greg Sanders tells us a few things people should be mindful of before heading out to collect candy.
“We want to encourage everybody to use paths and sidewalks as they’re traversing to the different residents,” Sanders says. “If there aren’t any sidewalks or paths to, walk facing traffic and keep as far off the road as possible.”
Sanders also encourages parents to supervise and walk with their children if they are 12 and under, especially if wearing a costume.
“Maybe use reflective tape and stickers on their costumes so they’re seen, wear light colors, have the kids carry glow sticks or flashlights. We want the costumes to fit well to prevent any kind of trips or falls.”
The sheriff’s department reminds drivers they should slow down and be alert, take extra time to maneuver around the areas and eliminate distractions.
Sanders says go to neighborhoods you’re familiar with, and inspect candy to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with.
